The Divine Liturgy — What to Expect
The Divine Liturgy is the heart of our worship. It is an ancient, living prayer — the same prayer offered by Christians for nearly 2,000 years. Here's what you'll experience when you walk through our doors.
Duration
Plan for about 2 to 2.5 hours. The service is rich and layered — every prayer, hymn, and response has deep theological meaning. You won't be watching a performance; you'll be participating in an act of worship that has shaped saints for centuries.
Language
Our liturgy is celebrated in English, Arabic, and Coptic. English translations and responses are available. Don't worry about following along perfectly — let the beauty carry you.
Standing
In the Orthodox tradition, we stand for most of the service as a sign of reverence and resurrection. If you need to sit, please do — there are chairs available and no one will mind.
Incense
You'll smell fragrant incense throughout the service. This is not decoration — incense represents our prayers rising to God, as described in Revelation 5:8. It's one of the ways we worship with all of our senses.
Music & Hymns
Coptic music is unlike anything you've heard. Our hymns are sung by the congregation — not a choir performing for you, but the entire community lifting their voices together. The melodies are ancient, the words are Scripture.
The Eucharist
Holy Communion is the center of the Divine Liturgy. In the Orthodox Church, we believe it is truly the Body and Blood of Christ. Communion is received by baptized Orthodox Christians. If you are not Orthodox, you are warmly welcome to receive a blessing from the priest instead.

The Church Year
The Liturgical Calendar — A Year of Feasts and Fasting
The Coptic Orthodox Church follows an ancient liturgical calendar that organizes the entire year around the life of Christ and the rhythm of fasting and feasting. Every season has meaning. Every fast prepares for a feast.
Coptic New Year (Nayrouz)
September 11
Marks the beginning of the Coptic Church year, honoring the martyrs who remained faithful under persecution. It is a day of joy, red dates, and renewed commitment to faith.
Advent
November 25 – January 6
A 43-day fast preparing for the Nativity of Christ. We fast to make room — in our bodies and in our hearts — for the coming of the Word made flesh.
The Nativity
January 7
The Feast of the Incarnation. God became man. We celebrate with a liturgy that begins at midnight and fills the church with light, hymns, and joy.
Great Lent
55 Days before Easter
The most intense fasting season of the year — 55 days of fasting, prayer, and repentance, leading to Holy Week and the Resurrection.
Holy Week
Final week of Great Lent
We walk with Christ through His final days — His entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, His betrayal, crucifixion, and burial. Special services are held each day.
Holy Fifty (Pentecost Season)
Easter to Pentecost
50 days of celebration following the Resurrection. There is no fasting during this season. The Church rejoices.
Season of the Apostles
Day after Pentecost to July 12
A fast in honor of the apostles, who fasted and prayed as they went out to share the Gospel with the world.
St. Mary's Fast
August 7–21
A 15-day fast honoring the Theotokos — the God-Bearer. It culminates in the Feast of her Dormition on August 22.

Throughout the Year
Annunciation (March 25), Nativity (January 7), Theophany/Epiphany (January 19), Palm Sunday, Resurrection (Easter), Ascension, Pentecost — these are the pillars of the Coptic liturgical year.
